In 2022/2023, the total consumption volume of wheat was just above 104 million metric tons in India. This was a decrease compared to the previous year, when the consumption volume of wheat was nearly 110 million metric tons.
Food grain consumption in India
While wheat is predominantly consumed in the northern states, rice accounts for nearly half of the country’s total food grain consumption and is mainly consumed in the southern and eastern regions.
These food grains constitute a large part of the Indian staple food market. Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and Assam, and West Bengal recorded high rice consumption, while Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Delhi and Maharashtra led wheat consumption among Indian states.
Food grain availability
The major food grains produced in the country include rice, wheat, coarse cereals, maize, millets and pulses. The annual per person availability of food grains has increased over the years, with an estimated 568 grams of food grain available per person each day. Additionally, the food availability index for India also showed an improvement in recent years.
