CB or Cartes Bancaires overwhelmingly lead the market for card payments in France, whilst Mastercard has a somewhat higher market share than Visa. CB is France's domestic card payment scheme - which, interestingly, started as a co-branding with Visa but eventually also includes Mastercard. The source does not clarify whether this is taken into account when it reported Cartes Bancaires. Nevertheless, "Bank Cards" as the term translates from French to English became a common phrase in France for any type of card payment - something which reveals itself in the country's high preference for card payments in a POS environment.
