As of August 2024, financial institutions held real estate investment trusts worth around 8.5 trillion Japanese yen in Japan. The REIT holdings of foreign investors amounted to 3.7 trillion yen. The Japanese real estate investment trust (J-REIT) market was established in 2001 and is one of the largest in the world.

Data was obtained electronically from the administrators of unitholder registers.
Non-Japanese investors: including corporations established under the law of foreign countries; foreign governments, local governments, and entities that are not incorporated; and individuals whose nationalities are other than Japanese, regardless of their place of residence.
Individuals and others: individuals and non-incorporated groups with Japanese nationality, regardless of their place of residence.
