By the end of the first trimester of 2024, India had recorded 24 cases of media rights violations. The overall number of media rights violations in the South Asian democracy since 2016 amounted to just under 300. The degree of press freedom in India has steadily declined since 2014. Criticism of the BJP government by news organizations was often met with attacks on these media institutions as well as journalists.
