United States: Number of shared micromobility vehicles 2023, by type of vehicle

In 2023, 60 percent of shared micromobility vehicles in the United States were e-scooters, totaling around 145,000 units. Out of the 96,000 shared bikes available on U.S. streets, 43 percent were e-bikes.

E-scooters used for the majority of micromobility trips

While e-scooters constituted the majority of shared micromobility vehicles available on U.S. streets, their share of trips made up more than half of all shared micromobility trips, although a slightly smaller percentage. With 69 million e-scooter trips in the U.S. in 2022, they made up 54 percent of shared micromobility trips.

E-scooters used for longer distance trips

Shared e-scooters and bicycles can take a similar role, as a flexible transport option for short journeys, in a city’s transport mix, but use patterns do vary between the two modes. On average, trips made by shared e-scooter in North America cover a longer distance than trips by shared pedal or e-bike. Trip durations on e-scooters, on the other hand, tend to be shorter than by bike. In 2023, the average e-scooter trip distance was two miles, while trips were on average 11.6 minutes long.
