In 2021, about 3.6 occupational injury deaths per 100,000 employed full-time equivalent workers occurred in the United States. This figure has remained relatively steady in recent years, and is a decrease from 2006, when the rate of occupational injury deaths stood at 4.2 per 100,000 employed FTE workers.
Occupational injury deaths per 100,000 full-time equivalent workers in the U.S. from 2006 to 2021
Rate = (Fatal work injuries/Total hours worked by all workers) x 200,000,000 where 200,000,000 = base for 100,000 full-time equivalent workers (FTEs) working 40 hours per week, 50 weeks
per year. The total hours worked are annual average estimates from the Current Population Survey (CPS).
In 2008, CFOI implemented a new methodology, using hours worked for fatal work injury rate calculations rather than employment.
