The United States imported approximately 1340 thousand barrels of petroleum from OPEC countries in 2023. This represents an increase of roughly 51 percent in comparison to 2020, when the reduced demand of petroleum due to the coronavirus pandemic resulted in that year's oil crisis. As the United States has stepped up its domestic oil production in the past decade, its import dependence has notably declined.
