Number of assaults at prisons in England and Wales 2003-2024

In the second quarter of 2024, there were 4,937 prisoner-on-prisoner assault incidents at prisons in England and Wales, the highest number in a quarter since the fourth quarter of 2019 when there were 4,709 of these kind of assaults. In addition to prisoner-on-prisoner violence, there were also 2,655 assaults on prison staff in this quarter, the highest since the third quarter of 2018.
