Baker’s recipe for success

Baker Concrete Construction generated the 16th highest revenue out of some 600 specialty contractors, an impressive ranking for a firm that began when three brothers of the Baker family quit their jobs to start their own business in 1968. Contractors rely on concrete to build homes, highways, and hospitals in the United States, and concrete is also the primary material for the completion of tall buildings worldwide . Some of the notable projects that Baker has worked on include the expansion of the Arlington National Cemetery and building the interwoven concrete structure for the National Veterans Memorial and Museum in Columbus.

Concrete: finding the right mix

Concrete is made by combining cement with water and aggregate; this malleable mixture can then be shaped before it solidifies. The most common type of cement is Portland cement, named after its similarity to Portland stone, which was quarried on the Isle of Portland in England. The cement industry in the United States has shown signs of recovery since the global financial crisis that hit in 2008: domestic production of portland and masonry cement grew to an estimated 87 million metric tons in 2018.
