Organ transplantation activity per million population in Austria 2021-2023, by organ

In Austria, 36.3 kidney transplants per million population were carried out in 2023. This is a slight decrease from 2022. Lung transplants were the second most carried out transplant procedure in Austria in 2023 at 13.8 per million, with liver transplant procedures coming third at a rate of 13.7 per million population. 

Waiting list in Austria

There were 1,034 patients waiting for a kidney transplant in Austria in 2023, the number waiting for a kidney has slightly increased since 2021. The number of patients waiting on procedures has also increased for heart and lung transplants. 

Activity compared to Europe

A rate of lung transplants of 13.8 per million population in 2023 meant that Austria had the highest rate in Europe. Additionally, Austria also had a relatively high rate of heart transplants in Europe, only having a lower rate than Croatia, Slovenia, and Czechia. Austria had the seventeenth-highest rate of kidney transplantation procedures, while Spain had the highest rate in the EU at 77.7 per million population.
