Leading airports in India FY 2023, based on aircraft movements
At the end of fiscal year 2023, Indira Gandhi International Airport was the leading airport based on the number of aircraft movements, with close to 430 thousand aircraft movements across India. The civil aviation industry has witnessed fast growth in the recent years. The south Asian country became the third largest domestic aviation market across the globe and was estimated to overtake the United Kingdom, to become the third largest overall air passenger market in 2024.

The number of international passenger arrivals in the country has increased gradually over the past few years. Rise in working group and middle-class incomes have accelerated air travel. Domestic as well as international passenger and freight traffic has increased gradually. As of August 2023, the country had 148 operational airports. Rising demand in the sector has also created a need for an increase in the number of airplanes and airports alike.
