In 2021, around 63.5 thousand people were employed as hairdressers across Australia. This number was forecasted to jump to 69.6 thousand by 2026, indicating continued growth in this segment of the country’s services sector. Many Australians rely on this sector for employment; the services sector is responsible for the largest contribution to the gross domestic product of the country.
Hairdressing and beauty services
Included within the hairdressing sector are services such as hair cutting, styling, coloring and grooming. In 2015, the hairdressing and beauty services industry was estimated to amount to 3.9 billion Australian dollars. In terms of beauty therapists, employment numbers topped 28.1 thousand in that year. When looking at personal services, hairdressing was the most common paid service for women and one of the leading services for men in 2019.
Boom in male grooming
Australians frequently use hair care products, and in keeping with global trends, more and more Australian males are opting to use products or to groom more often. Globally, the size of the male grooming market was estimated to increase to over 29 billion U.S dollars in 2024. To keep up with this growth, the development and innovation of products and services in this segment seems to be the way forward.
