In 2022, the production volume of sweet potatoes within the Japanese agricultural industry amounted to around 711 thousand tons, up from around 672 thousand tons in the previous year. Apart from sweet snacks and savory side dishes, sweet potatoes are also used as a substitute for rice in the production of Japanese liquor (shochu) in Japan.
