At the end of 2023, there were 668,988 women benefiting from their early retirement benefits under the general retirement scheme due to a long career in France. On the other hand, 22,551 men were receiving early retirement benefits due to a handicap. In total, more than two million people retired early due to a long career.

The retirement pension may consist of several distinct elements, governed by different attribution rules. The first element is the main advantage of direct right. It is acquired in return for the professional activity and thus the contributions paid (and validations of quarters acquired) related thereto. This benefit may be transferred to the surviving spouse upon the death of the beneficiary. This is referred to as a derivative right benefit, often referred to as a survivor's pension, which can be cumulated with a principal direct benefit.
