Netherlands, Europe and MEA e-commerce payment methods 2020
Dutch customers made significantly more use of bank transfers for e-commerce payments than their counterparts in Europe and the MEA (Middle East and Africa) regions. In 2020, bank transfers accounted for 60 percent of payments for e-commerce in the Netherlands.
This is due to the popular system of iDEAL, an inter-bank system local to the Dutch market which allows shoppers to use their bank account for online purchases. It is covered by all major Dutch consumer banks. The total number of online payments with iDEAL reached approximately 667 million in 2019, in a population of slightly more than 17 million people.
