In 2023, the tourist expenditure in Egypt was valued at around 14.1 billion U.S. dollars. Compared to the previous year, this was higher by around 1.9 billion U.S. dollars. Tourism expenditure in the country oscillated, peaking in 2023 over the observed period. Moreover, the spending dropped significantly in 2016 and 2020. The 2016 drop can be linked to a Russian plane crash in 2015, which departed from Sharm El Sheikh International Airport. This led to a decline in the number of tourist arrivals and, in turn, tourist expenditure. The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic was the primary reason for the other dip in tourism expenditure that occurred in 2020.
