The inland waterway freight transport volume in Germany decreased by 4.6 billion tonne-kilometers (-9.04%) in 2020 in comparison to the previous year. This marks the lowest transport volume between the periods of 2006 and 2020 and coincided with the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, freight transport by inland waterways began to recover but was still below pre-pandemic freight volumes. However, in 2022, the amount declined again and was recorded at 4.4 billion tonne-kilometers, which further fell to around 4.2 billion in 2023, being the lowest value in the entire recorded period.
