Restaurant industry in Denmark - Statistics & Facts
Danes seem to like eating out, as household consumption expenditure on restaurants also grew in the past years.
Among the quick service restaurants (QSR) in the country, Joe & The Juice appears to be one of the most popular chains of juice bars and coffee shops. The company, based in the Danish capital, Copenhagen, was founded in 2002 and operates its outlets across Europe, the United States, Asia and Australia. As of October 2019, most stores were located in the United States, closely followed by Denmark and Sweden. From 2014 to 2018, the annual revenue of Joe & The Juice rose constantly, amounting to 269 million Danish kroner in 2018.
Jenses Bøfhus is a Danish full-service restaurant (FSR), operating mainly as a steakhouse chain. It has been active on the domestic market for over 30 years, but also has restaurant chains in Norway and Sweden. Since 2012, revenue began to decrease and amounted to approximately 272 million Danish kroner in 2018. That same year, the restaurant chain generated losses of roughly 23 million Danish kroner.
In Denmark’s gastronomy industry, salaries depend very much on professions. Chefs, for example, can generally earn more than cooks. A chef is someone who obtains a professional degree and prepares food in a professional setting. By comparison, a cook does not necessarily need to be professionally trained. As of February 2020, the largest share of chefs had a monthly income of 30,000 to 32,999 Danish kroner, while cooks earned 24,000 o 25,999 Danish kroner.
