If you’ve ever looked at property prices in Highgate without immediately performing voodoo on an unsuspecting lottery ticket, then chances are you’ll like Lussmanns. It’s a big neighbourhood Mediterranean restaurant with a Giles Coren quote on the wall by the bathroom, Financial Times readers perched around carafes of pinot grigio, and just enough artsy posters and foliage to give it a modern West Elm-approved look. The menu will speak to anyone who’s into dolled-up gastropubs, long weekend European city escapes, or Peppa Pig—think cheddar-heavy organic burgers, a pretty standard steak, or a crispy chicken schnitzel ideal for hummus enthusiasts under 10. Lussmanns nails inoffensive family meals, and it’s worth stopping by with three generations in tow just to try the supremely comforting sticky date and ginger pudding. The cosy, warming desserts are the best things here.

Linguine Fiorentina

This is a nice, simple tomatoey number, and although we’d love more ‘nduja presence, the little flecks of walnut add a lovely crunch.

South Coast Mackerel And Potato Salad

Potato salad is our calling, our summer salvation, and our warming winter Dijon princess. So we have it on good authority that this is not a good take—the hard potato cubes need to be boiled for longer, the crème fraîche overpowers that mustard tang we love so much, and the saltiness of the mackerel doesn’t add much.

Onglet Steak & Frites

A pleasant, tender steak that arrives pre-sliced for ideal picking. A classic done right and the subtle saltiness of the fries will result in a lot of happy, hypnotic potato consumption.

Sticky Date & Ginger Pudding

This warming, nostalgic dessert is part pudding, part bedtime story. The toffee sauce melts into the ice cream and the warming ginger fruitiness is primed for chilly, scarf-clutching nights. Order it.
