Perfect experience

The checkout was smooth and efficient at Haneda. Product instructions and overall product use was fantastic! We had great signal throughout Tokyo. Battery on the pocket wifi also lasted all day!

The Sakura mobile sim was excellent

The Sakura mobile sim was excellent. We travelled outside of many of the mainstream tourist areas and the Sakura sim never missed a beat. Even on the snowfields, winding mountain roads and hiking in the forrests we always had coverage. It truly was one of the best things i did before visiting Japan. We used the physical sims, but my children all used the virtual sims. Both worked perfectly.

Second time and won't be the last....

This is my second time renting a Pocket WiFi box from Sakura Mobile and my experience both times has been great. Picking up the order from the kiosk at Terminal 1 of Narita Airport upon arrival was a breeze. Took less than 5 minutes before I had access to WiFi for my trip. The box has a long battery life. I think I spent a whole day out with the Pocket WiFi box on and when I finally got back to the hotel in the evening, it was barely pushing below 30%. Returning the equipment is even easier. You just pop the equipment into an included envelope and pop it in any Japanese Postal box. Sakura Mobile is my go-to when I recommend Pocket WiFi or SIM cards to friends that will visit Japan.

Japanese omotenashi AND in English!

Disclaimer: I'm giving 4-stars ONLY BECAUSE too many 5-star reviews don't seem credible.

I came to Tokyo for school in July but I couldn't get a regular mobile plan as I couldn't get my visa (and by extension my residence card) until December. And without a mobile number in Japan, it's hard to get anything done, e.g. online shopping, OFFLINE shopping, starting a subscription for anything, downloading Japan-exclusive apps on AppStore. Thankfully for Sakura, and without any hassle, I got my mobile plan and SIM card when I arrived at the airport. It was incredibly simple! Just insert the SIM into your phone and you're ready to go.

Sakura wifi device

The Sakura wifi device was just what I needed for my 2 story home, while I waited for NTT to verify my fiber line was ready to be used. The wifi speed was great and connection was stable for the devices we connected it with. At one point we connected 5, which included a Firestick and gaming computer. I admit I was skeptical of the service but it turned out to be very good. Just put the wifi device in the window or very close to the window, to ensure it can receive the necessary signals.

BEST OPTION FOR WIFI

The pocket WiFi really came in handy for my Japan trip. The speed was super fast, faster than my carrier here in the states. Battery life is also great, but recommend to pair it with an extra battery bank just in case you use social media a lot or for whatever reason. Easy to use. I didn’t even use the full 200 GB, only used like 10GB for my 2 weeks trip. Used it primarily for google maps, and upload stories on IG. When I picked it up at the airport (Narita) I couldn’t find the establishment until the ladies at the info booth helped me out, no big deal though. Dropping it off is so easy as well, instructions of how and where are included on an envelope. I would definitely recommend this company, it’s affordable and so worth it!

Not recommended

Worst eSim plan to travel with in Japan. We bought the unlimited plan for 17 days and by day 2 the connection speed was non-existent. It took forever to load webpages and couldn't even use Google maps which is frustrating when you are travelling. We ended up buying another eSim with a better provider.

Good service and equipment

Good service and equipment. The pocket Wi-Fi worked very well in places we visited in Japan. Easy pick-up at Haneda airport and return by post. Will use Sakura Mobile again.

Sakura Mobile leads in value and customer service

Sakura Mobile was a pleasure to do business with. As a visitor to Japan having a reliable internet connection was an important consideration and not having to pay an enormous fee for it was also a major consideration.
After using Sakura Mobile Pocket WiFi for almost two months December-January 2025 using their monthly plan which was a very good value I am quite pleased.
Sakura Mobile was also available to help prior to arriving in Japan and during my visit answering my questions.
Their FAQ’s are also robust, concise and helpful most questions I had were actually answered in them.
I also had many E-Mail conversations with them where other questions I had were answered.
Bottom line their pricing and World class customer service really sets them apart from the competition which I also considered before selecting Sakura Mobile.
I will continue to use them during my future visits as well.

Device was smoothly delivered to my hotel, worked perfectly during my 1 month stay. Return was simple with the pre paid enveloope; I just left it at the reception of my hotel when I checked out, they posted it for me.

My Experience

I liked the connectivity and ease of use. My main issue was I selected the start day as 10th of December and end date as 20th of December. I thought these days would apply to Japan however I got a mail 2 days before the end of my trip saying my plan was between 9th of December and 19th of December which was 1 day off. So I had to extend for 1 more day with an additional 550 JPY payment.

Super efficient and reliable solution for Japan travellers

Super efficient and reliable solution in our case as family on Japan vacation for 2 weeks. Easy collection of the device after landing in Tokio and simple deposit again in Narita before departure. Device worked excellently and power easily provides for a full day of WLAN. Strong connectivity and super fast surfing. Absolutely recommendable!

Osaka Trip

Instructions were clear and easy to understand. It was also a pleasant experience to have stable and fast data connection during my whole 5-day stay in Japan.

Works perfectly once you can get the eSIM installed

Bought an "unlimited data" Sakura eSIM ahead of my arrival in Tokyo. It's not really unlimited data, you're subject to a daily limit, but it's a fairly reasonable one for daily tourist stuff - maps, directions, sending photos to friends and family, trying to figure out what to do next, etc. The real problem is installing the eSIM. You have to scan a QR Code with the phone you want to install the eSIM on. So you can't purchase it from the same device without going through multiple technical hoops (screenshot, open photos, scan the QR Code from the screenshot.) In the end I was lucky I had a second device I could display the email with the QR Code in and scan it with the device I wanted to install the eSIM on. Those foibles aside, it worked perfectly smoothly once I landed and for the duration of my stay.

Essential for keeping connected in Tokyo

I just started a new contract for my iPhone 16 proso couldn’t go eSIM, so pocket WiFi was the next best thing.

On a previous trip I used a competitor's service, so I was shocked how small the device was on Sakura mobile.

It was enough to keep 5 phones connected during the day but since we were in different rooms at night most of us used hotel wifi.

Except for one very long day, the battery was sufficient to last while we were out without a portable charger.

Rare/transient dead spots in train/subway tunnels. Everyone having issues at Disney entrance because of the data congestion.

Great data service.
