Works perfectly once you can get the eSIM installed
Bought an "unlimited data" Sakura eSIM ahead of my arrival in Tokyo. It's not really unlimited data, you're subject to a daily limit, but it's a fairly reasonable one for daily tourist stuff - maps, directions, sending photos to friends and family, trying to figure out what to do next, etc. The real problem is installing the eSIM. You have to scan a QR Code with the phone you want to install the eSIM on. So you can't purchase it from the same device without going through multiple technical hoops (screenshot, open photos, scan the QR Code from the screenshot.) In the end I was lucky I had a second device I could display the email with the QR Code in and scan it with the device I wanted to install the eSIM on. Those foibles aside, it worked perfectly smoothly once I landed and for the duration of my stay.
