Edited: On 17 August 2023, Uber was ranked by Great Place to Work as one of the Best Workplaces in Australia as part of their annual list announcement.
The something special that draws people to Uber isn’t just a well known brand. We know we can’t simply rely on the power of our brand to attract and retain the brightest minds. But we think we’re a pretty great place to work, and Great Place to Work®, the global authority on workplace culture agrees! This year, we’ve been certified as an official Great Place to Work® in Australia. In their survey of our people, a whopping 92% of our employees agreed that Uber is a great place to work. Here’s why:
#1 – Inclusion and anti-discrimination
Diversity, equity and inclusion is really important to us at Uber, no matter where you work, so we were glad to see this as one of our top performing areas in the Great Place to Work® survey. 94% of our employees in Australia think that our leaders promote inclusive behaviour and avoid discrimination. To add to this, 100% of our employees said that “people here are treated fairly regardless of their sexual orientation”.
Over the last few years, we have really focused as an organisation on stamping out behaviours that are detrimental to creating psychological safety which we know is necessary for inclusion. We have rolled out numerous training programmes to prevent discrimination, bullying and harassment and uplift our standards of conduct. We’ve also redeveloped and relaunched our values and are well on our way to becoming a values-led organisation. We truly believe that Great minds don’t think alike and we have taken a stand inside and outside of Uber to fight racism and be a champion for equity.
#2 – Sense of belonging
Two of our highest scoring areas in the Great Place to Work® survey results centred around our employees freedom to express and be themselves and the extent to which they feel they are members of a community. We know that authenticity at work can only occur when employees feel safe, secure, and comfortable showing up as their whole selves, and to facilitate that we know we need to create an environment that nurtures a deep sense of belonging and psychological safety.
Two of our values, in particular, help support our efforts to create a psychologically safe workplace; Do the right thing. Period and Great minds don’t think alike. We do the right thing for our people and we know that different perspectives make us stronger. But it’s our people who really drive this. Through our own research we know that Uber employees feel their peers are a unique blend of intelligent, driven and supportive. They are welcoming and encouraging of each other and there is a real sense of mateship in the office down under. Teams help each other to achieve more together, and genuinely care about each other. And we know that this sense of belonging is one of the key reasons why our people stay at Uber long-term.
Emily Murch, Client Partner Manager“At Uber I have the opportunity to learn from my colleagues, highly motivated individuals with diverse and valuable backgrounds. In addition, the freedom to show my personal value and be decisive in my actions to reach shared goals. This only works because of the high degree of trust local leadership has in individuals, and the creative, strategic thinking at scale across the business.”
#3 – Pride in the team
What makes us a great place to work is the result of a rare combination of the opportunity to work with an innovative product, tackling real life problems that have real impact, at scale, across the country. This creates a phenomenal sense of pride for our employees through the work that they do together as a team. But this would not be possible without the unique working environment that we create at Uber Australia through a carefully balanced approach to nurturing a sense of team whilst allowing for flexibility and autonomy in the way we work as individuals that allows them to do their best work.
Cross-functional work is an area where our team in Australia really shines. Our recent deal with BP to offer discounted electric vehicle (EV) charging to Uber drivers was the result of a collaboration across multiple teams who worked together to make this happen, and ultimately drive EV uptake in Australia. It’s because of this type of work that 93% of our employees feel a sense of pride in their team and their team’s accomplishments and why they’re willing to give extra for the benefit of the team.
#4 – We know how to have fun!
We believe that work shouldn’t be dull and boring. We want our people to have fun while they work and we love that 94% of our employees feel that “our work environment is friendly and welcoming and they can have fun and enjoy each other’s company.” To top it off, we scored 93% on the Great Place to Work® indicator for ‘camaraderie’ which measures employees’ sense of enjoyment in the workplace.
There are lots of ways we bring fun into the workplace, whether it’s celebrating our wins for our 10 year anniversary or enjoying lunch together in the office on anchor days, not to mention our legendary table tennis championships and the eye-watering leadership team hot wings challenge!
Nic Everett, Account Executive“The culture crafted at Uber is second to none. Whether this involves outside of work initiatives, regular benefits, team events, or the countless ping pong competitions. I always feel eager and motivated every day at Uber, and would recommend it as a great place to work for all levels and skill sets!”
And if that’s not enough to convince you to join us on the ride, guess what, 96% of our employees said that when you first join Uber in Australia you are made to feel welcome!
How it works – to be certified as a Great Place to Work® your employees must respond to a survey administered by Great Place to Work® answering a range of questions designed to assess your employees overall experience at work. These questions represent the key drivers that contribute to building a great workplace based on 30 years of data and market validated research and you need a significant portion of your employees to respond to the survey to be eligible for certification.
